I think it is OK to consult economist's views, (if only to have one that agrees with your policy positions to trot out), but in the end some common sense has to prevail.

I, like you, took a different view of academic arguments when in the field (the Mekong Delta). From there I wrote "The Harvard Crimson" which was protesting the use of Napalm in South Vietnam.

I pointed out to them how useful it was to be able to suffocate, not burn mind you, the VC who were shooting AT ME by dropping Napalm on their tunnels caves and having the oxygen sucked out.

It wasn't an academic matter to me either.
