"Describing a chronic conflict as a cycle of violence may not be the most useful or accurate description.

I agree, at least in this case. I didn't describe the conflict as a cycle of violence, I said the current justifications for a cycle of violence (see below) must end before we can deal with the underlying interests and issues. I am constantly put upon to support or attend public protests over this violence, which I never respond to. I am barraged with complaints about what one side did last to deserve what they are getting now or will be getting sometime soon.

"There is a colonization of interests and issues that stem from ancient grievances, the majority of which cannot be dealt with until or unless the current justifications for a cycle of violence is ended. "

"I submit that none of those ideas fit well with what has happened, is happening, or is likely to happen.

I agree it is not a good fit. Would you mind asking their proponents to exit stage left? When neither side can claim to be threatened or to have cause for retaliation, then what? The fact is these entities have had periods of history where they supported and even gave harbor to one another against third party enemies. I used the term 'colonization of interests and issues' because I believe that is what has happened. Interests and issues that are not, or at least were not originated as elemental to these to groups have encamped and grown to be endemic to the conflict at large.

If you could neutralize the perception of threat from both sides, you might begin to unravel the entanglements of other interests and issues.
