True, but welfare reform was one of those rare, significant, potentially long term, improvements on previous government habits. It would be a shame to lose it. I agree that retreat would be a mistake. But I think that marking time is in order right now. Insisting on pressing forward at this point just sounds mean. Plus it's unlikely to be productive. I think that would be mistake in the end because it lends credence to those who think that welfare reform was mean spirited rather than principled and that it can't work.
