Everybody is suspicious of new people. It's called self preservation instinct. It's the level that gets people into trouble. I think people here are in the common sense range. It's true, there are very few non Caucasians where I live. So much so that on the rare occasions you see a black person it's startling. Most minorities are warm blooded. Freezing your butt off in the woods is not appealing to most.
