Funny you mentioned that article, I just happened to read it yesterday. Other thing that struck me was Canada's avoidance of our housing debacle. Good for them!

American car companies are not typical American companies in terms of health care. They awarded very generous health care benefits for workers and retirees in their union contracts, and can't easily change these contract provisions, even for future new hires. To the extent they can get a government to take over the cost, of course they are going to take it, even if they pay higher taxes because of the move, they still probably come out ahead.
