LJ, I respect the purpose of your post, and believe I understand the drift of your thinking. If you read my comments, they were supplemental: an additional observation, not a disagreement.

Re:"I feel to compelled to comment on your castigation of those on the thread who have physical gold, stored food and guns."

Read it again, please. Where do you see castigation? What you saw was a simple question: "What do they propose to do? Shoot them?"

No sensible person can object to prudent behaviour, and being prepared.

So don't take the observation (not castigation) personally. I was simply commenting on the obsession with dollars, without regard for the deeper social consequences. History tells us that if we don't understand some of the non-financial and non-economic aspects of The New Deal (in your country and mine) then we will revisit forgotten lessons, and learn them again.

If you can point us commentary on SI that deals with the psychological, social and cultural aspects of The Great Depression, I'd be grateful. However, I suspect that most commentary will continue to treat The New Deal as a simple question of dollars and cents, and economic strategy.

In my opinion, its effects went beyond balance sheets; it may not have cured the disease, but it was palliative to a deeply distressed populace, and many New Deal projects still make substantial contributions to the US economy.

It may not have been a dazzling success, but it was far from abject failure.

Regards,

Jim

i.e. will it create 4 million jobs as it is designed to do

It seems more like a stop job loss temporary measure that will not affect 2009 very much. By then Obama's double digit unemployment prediction will be correct.

I will be on Coast to Coast tonight for a full hour to talk about the economy. Nite Owls may wish to tune in 10:00PM - 11:00PM Pacific Time. Most major cities have a listening station. You can find one at coasttocoastam.com
