benwood,

<They were on the right track up until about the mid 90's when they went on an acquisition frenzy>

Mid 90's, first Trotman and his Ford 2000 (it is good to not engineer our vehicles and pay someone else to do it). Then Jac-the-Knife (Ford really would be a good fit with say, Aston Martin). And then Bill Ford Jr (too bad there is no such thing as zero to the power of the ten). Leadership at Ford was a serious concern, and IMO, the arrival of Mulally is the difference. My favorite comment about Ford i've posted before. A few years back Bill Ford was talking about how frickin green Ford is because they were putting grass on the roof of the Rouge Plant. Ok Bill, that is wonderful, but how about focusing on getting rid of the internal combustion engine and really making a meaningful dent, or do you just enjoy press time?

Met with Ford Purchasing two weeks ago. We had an hour and it took all of 15 minute to conclude our actual business, so we talked about the future. The most striking thing is the excitement you hear from everyone about the product pipeline. When you have a buyer raving about what is coming, and this is a guy who two years ago was saying (privately) that Ford's products were lacking, you get the impression that Ford is focused on what is important; which is making products people want.

My Ford Freestyle has never broken down and runs like a top. I am a bit of a maintenance fanatic, but if the quality is not there, that would not have made any difference. My previous Lincoln was also a solid car with only one Ford responsible quality issue in the four years I drove it.

re Taurus. It does seem they try to sell it for the price of a Honda Accord or thereabouts. For the same price, I'd rather go with a Honda. They have proven reliability track record for a long time, Ford doesn't.
