DLA Piper to cut 80 lawyers, plus staff

By Steven R. Strahler

Feb. 12, 2009 -- (Crain’s) -- DLA Piper LLP (US) is expected to lay off 80 attorneys and 100 staffers nationwide, becoming the latest Chicago law firm to react to slowing demand for legal services.

"While we had hoped for a rebound in economic activity, we believe that a major improvement in 2009 is increasingly unlikely," DLA said in an internal memo.

DLA officials declined to comment.

The layoffs affect associate attorneys but not partners and amount to about 5% of DLA’s nationwide contingent of 1,520 lawyers. Last week, another firm with deep Chicago roots, McDermott Will & Emery LLP, laid off 60 attorneys and 89 staffers, a cutback proportional to DLA’s.

DLA also began a two-month review in the United Kingdom that is expected to result in the separation of 30 lawyers and 110 staff. The firm has 3,700 lawyers worldwide.

DLA didn’t specify where the cuts would be concentrated or how many of its 250 lawyers in Chicago would be laid off. Its Chicago office is the city’s 10th-largest legal office.

“All of the firms in town are using this downturn as an opportunity to really get lean,” said John Cashman, a legal industry recruiter here with Major Lindsey & Africa LLC. “It’s almost become a daily event in Chicago.”

The collapse of real estate markets isn’t good news for DLA, a successor to Chicago’s Rudnick & Wolfe, which specialized in real estate law.
