From working myself for several Wall St. firms that automatically laid off people during recessionary bear market spells....and then hired back and trained new people for the same old jobs when the economy picked up, I was often struck by the fact that there were so many other superfluous expenses that could have been pared back. The Japanese are way more loyal to their employees. I suppose what we need is a cultural shift ......one that places some understand of the importance of people and less importance on CEO's skimming as much off the top as they can. Might we be going through a little of that now? steve
