(I'm sure you're far better informed about the histories of communist Russia and China; they're more your style, if you know what I mean). While it is true that FDR's "New Deal" led to a temporary decline in unemployment (and also led to his election to a 2nd term), it is only part of the story. There was a significant, not temporary decline in unemployment from 1933 to 1937.......from 25% to 11% if I remember correctly.During the 2nd term he decided, "Well, the economy is rolling now. It is time to cut back spending on these government programs." Nooooo......FDR wanted to keep going. However, the Republicans complained about all the spending. So the spending bills were cut back. [Sound familiar]Republicans: part of the problem, not the solution What happened? The Roosevelt Recession of 1937. An economic collapse during '37 and '38 that almost cost him the election. What'd he do? Started spending like hell -- $5 Billion -- which at the time, was a near doubling in the federal budget. Unemployment went back up temporarily but came back down was into single digits by the time WW II broke out. FDR was a great president. He was a Democrat. The simple truth is that WWII ended the Depression. The New Deal only temporarily turned things around. Only after FDR pushed through massive spending (4x our federal budget) on military hardware did the Depression truly come to and end. The simple truth is you have taken history and mangled it.You want to do that now? Today is a different time and place. We're not going to build thousands of war planes or ships. We're developing new technologies that allow us to conduct humane wars, such as the Iraq War. To defend ourselves against extremists while not firebombing foreign cities. Solid spending is the key.....it will create jobs just as quickly now as it did back in the 1930s.I'm not sure even a big war can defeat the economic cycle now. Huh? Just a few days ago you were saying this was a nothing recession...now you're saying its worse than the Great Depression. Dude, I wish you'd make up your mind.
