That's not hair splitting. If you can't differentiate between the cost of medical care and the cost of health insurance, you can't analyze your way out of a paper bag. Likewise if you can't differentiate between the premium paid by a family of four and their actual medical expenses. There's no way to get at the facts and the logic of any scenario if you think analysis is "hair splitting." Not that that keeps anyone from having an opinion, of course, just a well-considered one.

There are a lot of factors in the issue of delivery of health care. One needs to be able to isolate and analyze each of them, then put it all together into a coherent system. Flapping arbitrarily among thoughts doesn't cut it.

It also helps to be able to form coherent sentences.
