Hawk,

No argument that lack of regulation in the MBS, CDO, CDS, your favorite acronym goes here, market was a huge mistake/factor. I guess it depends on your perspective, since the boyz made out like bandits while their captive regulators (and their political bosses) looked the other way (or even held the doors open for them).

And don't forget the complicity of the rating agencies, and the close-my-eyes-and-pretend-real-hard *regulated* portfolio managers (pensions, insurance companies, etc.) who could only buy triple A paper and resolutely refused to look too hard into what were obviously fantasy ratings.

There's plenty of blame to go around...same as it ever was.
