Why is Darwin so important to so many?
Darwin showed how to extend the scientific method to areas in which direct experiments cannot be performed. This is an important paradigm. It has been especially useful in astronomy where the same problem applied. The more distant light is also older, and this is similar to gaining information from fossils. In both cases a process that cannot be directly be recreated is inferred from the evidence left from earlier times.

Don't worry, there will be Einstein day, etc.... but you have to remember what Darwin's theory replaced vs the others. A draconian dogmatic (and made up) belief system propogated by the Catholic church to further it's own end. That's why Galileo is so puffed up as well. The Catholic church (and other denominations) have actually made Darwin a much bigger person than he actually was.

Cant say that about Einstein.

Remember in fact that he (Darwin) had a contemporary that essentially came up with the same theory about the same time. He was also trumpeted by THE (at that time) scientific community probably because he was one of their own... where as Mendel wasn't even understood for decades, although also very important.
