Because I think healthcare should be a 'public good' provided or guaranteed by government, like protecting us via the military. If you look back at history, I believe there was the same kind of outcry by the opposition during the FDR era to the concept of social security. Is healthcare as important as a safety net for the old? I think it is. Look at the current system - expensive as hell, you have to worry about losing it all if you get sick, doctors are pissed because they need a bigger staff to battle the insurance companies than to provide the healthcare, and consumers have to battle with the insurance companies at the worst possible time, when they are very ill. I don't believe this level of 'conflict' exists within entities like the medicare payment system. Part of it is also my own interaction with the system. Since both my wife and I are self employed, we constantly have had to worry about the lack of choice, high costs, and even if we could get insurance if we became ill and then had to move to another state. The current system sucks...
