How did pre-Darwin astronomers like Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler manage without Darwin to guide them?

Galileo practically invented science. In some ways though you can think of their discoveries as the "low hanging fruit". The methods that Darwin introduced provided a framework to get to subtle answers, answers that previous scientists though might be too vague to have a provable answer.

Astronomy didn't end with Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo. There have been many discoveries since then.
