Studying nature and the universe is probably the most genuinely religious thing a person can do.

I often wonder why religious people don't just say, God is the Big Bang, he set the universe in motion, in such a way that it would inevitably lead to us. To study ourselves, the universe, the Big Bang, nature, would be to study God.

That was basically the view of those of our Founding Fathers who were Diests: God created the universe but has had nothing to do with it since then.

But most religious people seem to want a God who is involved on a day to day basis, someone who can and will interfere on our behaves, someone who will listen to our pleas and alter the course of events accordingly.

Seems absurd and vain to me, but it is what it is...

Had you actually read the article, you might have noticed that Gingerich was referring to the 200 year old famous argument of William Paley. The Gingriech argument (this article) is a challenge to Dawkins in which he details the current scientific scenario from the unfashionable perspective of a faithful believer and a Christian.

Perhaps it would help you to make the effort and actually read the article.

"......the question is, does he believe in a personal god?"

I doubt you even know what you are questioning but if you can define belief in a 'Personal God,' apart from mocking the scripture of some religion you don't understand, I might be willing to discuss it with you.
