There is nothing confusing about thorium, so why label it as a straw man ? The US was well aware of the practical fission reactor possibilities of thorium even in the 1940's, but uranium was easier because its fission produces more neutrons and hence is self sustaining and more adaptable to producing materials for bombs. Hence our legacy.
