I was working in the woods during the 1990 Census. Census takers came to my office and asked me where they might find people camping out. I told them about some J-hole camp sites (places with water and flat ground, accessible but not easily found).

I even told them about a bridge to nowhere I knew about, which was built just in time for the other side to be declared wilderness, and make it unnecessary (pork of the day, you know). This bridge had great ice cold water and was a fine place for camping if you had no tent. I've even camped there myself on occasion.

Presumably they went out and searched these sites. I don't know whether they found anybody.

I didn't understand the necessity of finding this kind of person. Now I see why they want it.

Better to go out and count them than make some cockamamie computer projection of people camping in the woods.
