Efficiency rate of current PV technology is about 12%/18%...which means that a typical 1M^2 panel is able to generate 120W/h to 180W/h. Still, the roof of a typical home is large enough to generate the average energy required to support the entire household. If one could buy and install a grid attached 6-8KWh PV system for a reasonable price (say $10K) it would likely become an "appliance"...right now that system would cost about $50K+...we need economy of scale and incentives to help create it.
