I went to college for free, too, undergrad, that is. I had a National Merit Scholarship, a state scholarship, a local scholarship, and one from the college. Grad school I paid for on my own. Was working then. Part of the problem with paying for college now is that so many more people go because you pretty much have to given the sorry state of learning in high school. But there are still scholarships our there for those who can earn one. It's the kids who wouldn't have gone to college in my day because they couldn't afford it but who could get a good job without it are stuck with the debt.

I don't think college is more expensive now. When I went, my annual tuition would have been more than half a year's salary for my dad. But state schools were and continue to be affordable, I think. I just checked a random state school. Oklahoma State charges $131/credit hour. That's close to chump change.
