Well, when the U.S. was on the Gold Standard it still had a reasonable manufacturing base.

A much smaller one than it has now.

BTW I'm not implying that it has a bigger manufacturing base now because of the shift from the gold standard, (I'm also not implying that idea is false, I'm not commenting on it either way.) I'm just saying that your argument is based on a faulty premise.

When we were on the gold standard we were also producing a lot of gold. The United States has been a very resource rich place.

The refusal to tap our own resources makes being a manufacturing center very difficult.
