it, re: "decline in the logic chips," ???? In your post you stated, "b. Fortunately Intel is recognizing the decline in the logic chips, and is switching before a 'problem' manifested itself." I believe this is incorrect, Intel is seeing a decline in flash memory growth, not logic chips. With this news, "logic chips" translates to microprocessors and chipsets. Looks like the news boys really muddled the story on this; confusing "logic" with flash and even saying "logic memory". No wonder folks are confused! So the real news; first and formost is the fact that Intel will build out the Israeli fab 18 for microprocessors . This actually accelerates new capacity for processors over the original plan. There have been rumours that this change was being considered, but this is the first official confirmation of this switch. Now what process? The Texas fab was intended (I think) for the first .18 micron process. What will be installed in Isreal? Probably both .25 and later .18 I guess. Any better info out there? The delay to the Texas fab will allow a cleaner startup with new processes and equipment. Perhaps now it will be fitted with all 300mm wafer size equipment? Whatever Intel chooses it will now be on a more rational schedule and therefore more efficiently fitted out. The only loser here is the flash memory business. Intel flash is out a whole fab! Painful for those in this division, but perhaps good for Intel if the cost are too high to make money at projected market prices. In summary, microprocessors get more capacity sooner with this change. This says that Intel sees microprocessor unit volume growing as fast or faster than previous projections. Jeff
