Vinter -

The theory is that it's like jump starting a car. You have to supply an initial jolt of energy somehow, but once you do, the other energy inputs start to operate, and the car runs on its own.

I'm not certain that the theory is correct, but what I've read about the Great Depression suggests that it might well be.
