"Earth is the cradle of mankind, but one cannot live in the cradle forever"
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky

The impending unsustainability of the planet plus impending disasters plus the possibility of a giant meteor intersecting earth's course should energize the need to get a stable colony off earth.

We seem to be on this unsustainable population growth pattern

Closer to the opposite. Many wealthy countries are facing declines in population, particularly Japan. Also Russia (but its not a very wealthy country, more in the middle).

The US hasn't gone so far, but its fertility rate is lower than in the past, and its barely above replacement rate. Immigration will keep our population growing but our main source of immigration, Mexico, only has a third of our population, and its fertility rate is not massively higher, and is declining. ( indexmundi.com ) Unless these demographic trends reverse the US will never have a billion people.
