America Online Was Top Internet Access Provider in 1996-1997 New York, Oct. 24 (Bloomberg) -- America Online Inc. was the top service provider from 1996 to 1997 in a booming Internet access industry, according to a study by Maloff Group International, the New York Post reported. Revenue for the industry increased at almost 25 percent a month for the past 18 months. Ranking behind America Online were service providers CompuServe Corp., International Business Machines Corp., Microsoft Corp., UUNet Technologies Inc. and Netcom On-Line Communication Services Inc., the paper said. America Online recently cut its stake in competitor Excite Inc. to 2.9 million shares from 3.3 million shares. o~~~ O
