I don't think that the profit motive is essential to quality. I think that's fair enough. There have been times when, for example, the post office was pretty efficient. And I would agree with you about the "mindless standardization" and that that likely plays a significant role in the Medicare mess. Talk to any ex-military person and they can tell you about that, as well (although, someone somewhere thought it was a good idea). The doctor in your example was being creative. We still have creativity in our system. I suspect that those who are fond of their socialized systems, like the Canadians, are victims of the lack of creativity. The doctors follow the standards. I think this is true, too. But creativity isn't fostered by either Medicare or Medicaid. And if you get some government committee making health care decisions, trying to quantify which lives are and are not worth saving, it is a very steep slippery slope. Apparently, this is where the Obama approach is heading, and I'm concerned about it. Those who like the concept of a centralized database with all your health records in it have never dealt with IRS. Years before I began developing medical practice software, I was a CPA in private practice. And I've seen screwed up accounts from hell that destroyed peoples lives -- and we were only dealing with money. Imagine had it been life or death? There are those who believe government can solve all problems. But I'm of the view that government should solve problems that aren't readily solved by other means. And I came to that conclusion after dealing with various state & federal agencies over an extended period. That is intended to take nothing away from people like you have allowed government to do some good things. It is just that anytime you lay on that kind of bureaucracy it is going to make trouble somewhere along the line....
