If neither vessel knew they'd had a collision, how did they figure it out?

You know how well water conducts sound..... At the time of impact on board the US ship the sonar operator heard the other crew panicking in french.....<g> Mean while aboard the French ship all they could hear was WTF SOB GD French, so they knew they hit an American vessel of some kind....<ggg>

Both knew they had a collision but didn't know with what. Both surfaced cutting their patrol short and reported a collision with an underwater object and they were headed in. Spooks in each Navy put 2 and 2 together and said, hmmm, both hit underwater objects in the same chunk of ocean, I'll bet they hit each other.
