When I first started thinking about investing in the stock market in 1992, ..... Brinker was the MAIN reason (not the only one) that I finally decided to take the plunge.

If you knew then that Brinker was bullish at the top in 1987 and went to 100% cash near the bottom after the 1987 crash and did not return to fully invested until the year before you starting thinking about him, do you think you would have used his advice to become fully invested?

My guess is no so you basically got lucky to be ignorant of Brinker's true record. That is why I think most who say they time the market are lucky more than anything else, including those who have correctly been bearish for the last decade.
