This is nothing against Americans in general but I keep finding myself wondering how, given the self centered way Americans think, we are ever going to compete against the Chinese. Day after day I read about how people think they are entitled to high paying jobs, about how wages are protected by whatever means, and how high level managements are still acting incompetently (when they act at all). It is incredible how much incompetence, greed, and even arrogance there is in this country, and it goes right to the top in both the government and corporate worlds. The mantra seems to be "lower everyone's wages but mine".

The only good thing I see coming out of the auto industry upheaval is change. Until recently it was obvious that when the Chinese started importing cars into the US it was all over for the American automakers. MAYBE they will be able to deal with the competition when this is all over.

Attitudes have to change in this country or countries like China are going to kick our a$$.

OT: "many don't have the educational background or desire to communicate for a living. b/c of that lack of education or desire not to communicate, they are thus stuck working for low wages with no pension and have to work overtime to fund the pensions of teachers."

Yes. While you might disagree, there's a relatively high hurdle to get into teaching (public school).

I don't have time to get into a big discussion with you, nor is it on-topic, but I think that teachers should be paid well. FYI, a teacher doesn't work just 8a-3p nor just 9 months a year. However, I also think that teachers should not have tenure. There needs to be a way to determine who is a low-performing teacher and bounce him out. Additionally, I will agree that the big pensions cause teachers who have burned out a long time ago to hang around to get max salary. But, prison guards, cops, firemen have even sweeter deals where they work a lot of overtime in the last five years to double their pensions and retire after 20 years of service. Where's your griping about that situation?
