Will Obama/Rangel return money from accused $9.2B fraud?

In case you missed it:

The Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday that it has charged financier R. Allen Stanford and three of his companies with orchestrating a $9.2 billion investment and sales fraud.

The SEC’s complaint alleges that the fraud centered on a CD program in which Stanford International Bank promised “improbable and unsubstantiated high interest rates.”

SIB, based in Antigua, allegedly acted through a network of Stanford Group Company financial advisers to sell approximately $8 billion of “certificates of deposit” to investors.

The SEC’s complaint also alleged an additional scheme relating to $1.2 billion in sales.
The NY Times reports, correctly that this is a “Texas Financial Firm.” That being the case, one would expect their readers to perhaps think that Mr. Stanford would be partial to the to the party not of President Barack Hussein Obama.

That is not the case.

Thanks to the good folks at OpenSecrets.org. We can learn that Mr. Stanford maxed-out to Mr. Obama and Ways & Means Chairman (and Joint Tax Vice-Chair) Charles Rangel, among others, using his Virgin Islands address:

Notice that Mr. Stanford donated to the NRCC as well. However, you will note that it was a lump sum and no individual Republican were the lucky recipients of Mr. Stanford’s largesse.

Now in addition to a financier and banker throwing money to a guy like Mr. Rangel, here is a look at the committee assignments (and financially-related subcommittees) of the Dems in the 111th Congress who received Mr. Stanford’s cash.

Rep. John Boccieri (OH-16)
Agriculture (Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research Sub)
Transportation & Infrastructure
Rep. Debbie Halvorson (IL-11)
Agriculture (Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research Sub; Farm Commodities Sub)
Small Business (Finance & Tax Sub)
Veterans’ Affairs
Rep. Dan Maffei (NY-25)
Financial Services (International Monetary Policy Sub)
Judiciary (Commercial Law Sub)

Rep. Eric Massa (NY-29)
Agriculture (Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research Sub)
Armed Services
Homeland Security
Rep. Michael McMahon (NY-13)
Foreign Affairs
Transportation & Infrastructure
Rep. Greg Meeks (NY-6)
Financial Services (Financial Institutions Sub; International Monetary Policy Sub; Domestic Monetary Policy Sub)
Foreign Affairs
Rep. Walter Minnick (ID-01)
Agriculture (Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research Sub)
Financial Services (Financial Institutions Sub; Capital Markets, Insurance and GSE Sub)
I wonder if any of the following will occur:

Will the White House Press Corps ask the President about his relationship with Mr. Stafford?
Will they ask is the President will return/donate to charity Mr. Stafford’s conribution?
Will the NY Times report as to the significant amount of New York Democrats which received money from Mr. Stafford?
Will the Times specifically ask Mr. Rangel about any relationship with Mr. Stafford, or his contributions?
Will the Times ask any of the NY Dems to return/donate the money?
Will any national press follow-up on Mr. Rangel’s penchant of travelling to the Virgin Islands (home of Mr. Stanford) with members of the Congressional Black Caucus in apparent violation of ethics rules?
Will there be any mention of Mr. Rangel’s efforts to protect wealthy Americans (like Mr. Stanford) who reside in the Virgin Islands from paying their full share of taxes?
One can only wonder.
