RESEARCH SPOTLIGHTS: (All prices as of 1:05 p.m. ET) ** UBS Securities said analyst Mark FitzGerald downgraded five semiconductor capital equipment stocks because of concern about the impact on business from the Asian currency crisis. He cut APPLIED MATERIALS INC. (AMAT: 33, - 4), LAM RESEARCH CORP. (LRCX: 36-15/32, - 2-17/32), NOVELLUS SYSTEMS INC. (NVLS: 48-7/16, - 2-15/16) and CFM TECHNOLOGIES INC. (CFMT: 24-1/2, - 4-1/8) to hold from buy. Cut INTEGRATED PROCESS EQUIPMENT (IPEC: 22, - 4-1/8) to buy from strong buy. "We believe fall out from the Asian currency crisis will lead to steep cuts in capital spending programs at many of the leading Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese firms," FitzGerald said in a research note provided by UBS.
