I had a friend who owned a laundrymat and wanted a shotgun load that would sting crooks at close range. We loaded up some shells with popcorn. At 20' the popcorn would blow through 1/4" plywood.

I used to have some loads that would shoot about 100' and then would explode like a cherry bomb. Great for chasing critters out of the yard.

Doc Holliday (of OK Corral fame), I was told, loaded his twelve-gauge with a stack of eight silver dimes. It made for a fast-spreading "buckshot" round whose short-range effects were devastating.
It would be my weapon of choice in vampire country.
Sawed-offs were illegal by around Prohibition time. Thirties, if memory serves.
