Who they compared themselves to isn't very meaningful. They don't become poorer because they compare themselves to the US, and they where poorer than us. They where very wealthy for a Latin American country. They where more like the poorer European countries than they where like Bolivia.

As for inequality, sure that was high, but its not like its low now, the difference is that you do well if you can serve tourists or if your in favor with the party. In the later case you might not necessarily have a done of money, but the party gives you what you need.

Also as your own source points out "Freedom of expression was not seriously curtailed". Things are a bit different in today's Cuba, and that isn't a good change.
