Obama is and was heavily identified with the stimulus ever since McCain punted on it. If he can, at a minimum, avoid a a major economic belly flop, the Republicans loose the economy as an issue. And that is a large part of their non-wingnut base. In addition, most of their money. So losing the economy means they will be a minority party for the foreseeable future. So all they can do is soft pedal the problem and block efforts to stave off interventions. They will continue to do what they did in the House and Senate, which is push things they want and then get in a huff and refuse to vote for some manufactured reason. This way, when things do get passed, they can point to certain things and own them, thus defusing their obstructionism. It depends on people being too distracted to put all the pieces together. And if the economy does belly flop, then they can do a "I told you so", even though at the moment they are claiming it won't happen. Their only shot is to play games and fast talk their way out. Google the Panic of 1873 and the Long Depression. Lots of stuff on the net. As far as predicting this mess, RW and I have been talking about it for a few years now. Didn't predict the scale, there was no way to know how stupidly greedy the major players were.
