I think I've got it - the bridge was binding so I slacked up the string and re-did it ... seems good now. This is an inexpensive guitar and I'd like to become my own tech at some point. It's like doing your own car maintenance for a motor head, I 'spose. Something to do and a cheap guitar seems the place to practice. I have admit that the guitar is better when I just don't use the tremelo bar. That is really the weak link. Actually stays in tune quite well without that feature. I suppose it could be a sticky nut or something, so I don't mind some experimenting.
