My reference to "Democrats" was meant to include both the Illinois and Senate Democrats. Both groups did initially oppose the Burris appointment, though once Burris convinced (falsely as it turned out) the Illinois Democrats that his appointment was not "tainted", Harry Reid and the other Senate Democrats fell into line.

The Illinois Democrats caved for two reasons. One, the appointment was legal, and secondly, they probably felt that a stronger candidate could knock off Burris in next year's primary. Burris has, after all, lost his last three statewide elections.
