Probably not. There are always Democrats who need to play to their conservative constituents to get re-elected. The Republicans just had to wave the specter of terrorism and push the buttons marked "anti-American", "socialism" or "anti-Christian" to get re-elected. But, in 2006 that changed. The Republicans got blind-sided.
