If you could just find a 5% annual incremental improvement for 10 years solar would be 'cheap energy'. Storage still an issue... but there is no 100% solution you will still need some sort of centralized power generation. At least until you have a super smart, super efficient grid.

I agree with you. . I didn't like any the idea of having a large battery system...I came to the conclusion that right now it's better to be on grid and have the power company still provide me off hour service and manage any excess produced during daylight hours. I have been monitoring the cost curve and have seen price/watt coming steadily down, but still not fast enough. I have seen best prices at $4/W. At $2/W a typical full house system starts to look really attractive, with payback in less than $10 years.
