Patron, here is the current CDS and total derivative exposure of three major banks...

------------
BAC has as much as $38.2 trillion in derivatives exposure and $3.4 trillion in CDS

C has as much as $40.0 trillion on derivatives exposure and $2.5 trillion in CDS

JPM has as much as $92.0 trillion in derivatives exposure and $9.5 trillion in CDS
------------

i pulled that from an articel that appeared in google finance news.

i've heard total derivative exposure is over $500 trillion.

you may well be right that total CDS exposure is in the $30 trillion range as the early estimates were based on limited information and the bigger the number, the more scared people would get and the bigger the crisis appeared so government could take advantage of it.

The most recent data of which I'm aware put nominal CDS totals at $16.1 trillion in the US (as of 10/1/2008) and $57.3 trillion world wide (as of 6/2008). The US CDS total includes total return swaps and credit spread options as well as CDSs.

I have a full page covering both US (data from the Treasury OCC) & world wide (data from the BIS) derivatives.
