Maybe one of these days, we'll actually have the market figured out, and a planned economy would be feasible.

You are always sooo black/white on this stuff. Nobody is talking about a 'planned economy' and nobody liberal or conservative wants it. But when you have a clear national interest there is nothing wrong with pushing things in that direction. It's not a new concept; there are literally millions of regulations to protect the public, the vast majority very good. Nobody is currently saying it was a bad idea for Eisenhower to build the interstate highway system or for Lincoln to build the transcontinental railway. Those government actions were VERY good for the economy.

Government is NOT always wrong... most times they are right.
