You make a good point -- there was that little Vietnam skirmish as well as a few others... But the thing Michael doesn't get is we were dealing, largely, with rational people at that time. WRT USSR, MAD would work because neither party wanted to lose all. When you have a lunatic at the helm who believes the highest calling is martyrdom, MAD is definitely not a good idea, it is a recipe for disaster. The only real option you have is cold, brute force. Even were Obama to strike a deal with Iran, how long would it last? At this point it is a train wreck anyway. The Iranians can clearly see they're dealing with someone who doesn't have a clue how to handle the situation. I think the cat's out of the bag.
