A self-employed person is required to pay the full 15.3% out of his own pocket (although he gets a partially-mitigating income tax deduction).

I Germany a self employed person must pay it all out of his own pocket with no tax deduction possible. If he controls the corporation he works for (50% or more), then same rule, which means his company cannot pay part of his SS and deduct it from corporate taxes.

That said, as self employed in Germany paying for SS is optional, one doesn't have to pay.
