I'll still take O over McPalin any day.

As bad-ugly as this is, can you imagine how awful things would be with them in office?

I can't either. <ng>

Economics geeks like have spent huge amounts of time trying to understand financial markets in order to develop our opinions. I don't care how bright Obama is, he simply can't be expected to have the same intuitive level of understanding that even the denizens of this thread have. Getting to be President sucks up a lot of spare time, and doesn't leave much time for understanding credit bubble dynamics.

The best hope for a good President is to happen upon an excellent advisor. Unfortunately, this is a case where the "experts" are the same idiots that contributed to the problem in the first place. Even among those who WERE willing to speak against the status quo before we fell into the abyss have diverse opinions on the proper antidote. Krugman saw it coming, but thinks Big Government is the answer.

I happen to think the only things Government can help with here are

1. Make sure state and local government actions are not pro-cyclical (ie back up their spending to avoid government layoffs at any level)

2. Provide a temporary safety net to those displaced by the depression, again to minimize pro-cyclical effects of their layoffs.

3. Encourage renewed focus on domestic value creation by our corporations, and discourage overseas shifting of value creation.

4. Provide risk capital via strategic industry investments and things like SBIR (small business innovative research) grants

Remember how the prospect of no Treasury Secretary was treated by the mkts?

wow, if this is what treas/sec market approval looks like, give me NOTHING...this current leg down started when turbo timmeh opened his yap and then basically went into hiding...as far as mcsame goes, that was a total nonstarter and its useless to discuss it at this point to begin with
