It annoys the hell out of me that we are so far behind other first world countries in this mode of transportation.

But look how much further ahead we are in highways, which is what Americans want and need.

Without our Interstate system the country would have ground to a halt years ago.

It is really similar to the bogus argument many people have made about our telephone system versus the cellular systems in other countries. Yes, it is true that some other countries jumped ahead of the US in cellular technology. Because prior to cellular, they had NOTHING. It was cellular (invented in America, of course) that made ANY communications possible in many of these countries.

The same is true of mass transit. America has not been particularly well-suited for it in the past because the price of fuel was such that Americans would not use it.

Times have changed. I would support a massive expenditure for high-speed rail connecting major cities. LA, Vegas, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Dallas, Houston, you name it. These are projects for which the time has come.

But instead of paying people to become productive and build these projects Obama is paying people to watch Oprah.
