Mark (Chat off subject) - Good question, as Gates already owns a 10% stake (Non-voting) in (RNWK). Microsoft purchased the right to incorporate the core into IE which they are already doing. In addition, it is understood that the license fee is very attractive.

In the agreement, Microsoft has the right to build upon the RNWK's technology but has to give any improvements back to RNWK. Secondly, Microsoft agreed to bundle RealAudio and RealVideo client into current and future releases of IE. Lastly, Microsoft is forbidden from breaking compatibility between its products and RNWK.
These were lessons Rob Glaser learned watching the Microsoft - Sun Java agreements.

Mr. Glaser (CEO Realnetworks) is from Microsoft and in the beginning was in charge of MS:Word later he became the Executive Vice President of MultiMedia with Microsoft and reported directly to Bill.

Netscape also has purchased the license and is using it in Nav. Real Audio is on 20 Million desktops already with contracts with ESPN, FOX, MSNBC, C-SPAN, CNN and ESPN. Their technology is not only the desktop remember but the server as well. So it appears that RNWK is the standard for streamming Video and Audio over the internet.
