They aren't competing against each other. They have consolidated themselves into organizations with representatives to lead them. These organizations literally become legalized monopolies of labor.

That's usually seen as a good thing, especially by liberals, but they are some of the biggest special interest groups around. When what's good for them doesn't line up with what's good for society in general, then you have problems.
