No, but he just made the republican party a little smaller still. Civil Unions seemed a reasonable method to both protect traditional marriage while recognizing gays have real lives. Economic conservatives and libertarians who weren't focused on social conservative issues could agree that civil unions, properly structured, might be a reasonable approach.

So, if the republican party doesn't want to acknowledge even that concept (which many in the party had before) then they just lose more members from the moderate, non-social conservative wing.

Pretty soon the "party" will be pretty linear No big tent here.

Makes you wonder if the republicans expect to win a national election in the next twenty years.
