By the way, there *must* be some way to improve the model. Because I often now watch newscasts online at times that I want to.

Look at this excellent NYT page:

nytimes.com

It has the video of Obama's speech, which I feel like watching today, and commentary.

I use CNN for streaming events like an Obama speech. Its great.

I wouldn't mind if they inserted commercials. That's the only way I can imagine newspapers can survive.

But isn't that more tv than newspaper? Maybe that's the way for newspapers to go.

The NYT online presence is very high quality, they still have a "print" mentality and don't sacrifice quality--because the first edition *is* usually print.

That of course, is the NYT.

I too like the NYT site. I don't think the problem is the site but the business model. How do they gain the level of advertising they have in papers? Maybe commercials like you suggest when they stream events. In any case, that seems to be the problem......they can't generate the revenues they need...maybe because they still have print editions. I think its a tough transition esp. for people who grew up with newspapers, not the internet.
