"This isn't much different than the chemical weapons assistance given to Iraq in the early 80's and cut off after April Glaspie said some of the dumbest words ever uttered by a US ambassador"

And this is why everyone thought Iraq had WMD's! Duh, when we supply them to use against whomever it's OK, but when we then decide (THE DECIDER) that we no longer want Saddam to have them or so we thought, WAR! It's all hypocrisy.

What chemical weapons assistance?

The most the US provided to Saddam's regime was NON-Weaponized biological cultures, which we offered to EVERY OTHER nation under Dept of Commerce terms for medical research. Most of these cultures were available from many other sources. But more importantly, it's one thing to possess the raw culture, and quite another to weaponize it.

I was a member of the Iraq Survey Group during it's last year in existence. I saw a lot of stuff and talked with a lot of people/analysts while stationed there. And NEVER did I see anything that suggested the US was providing chemicals or biological material to be used for Saddam's WMD programs.

HOWEVER, I did see a lot of stuff related to materials provided by the Polish, Spanish, German, French, Chinese and various other countries. In fact, many empty bomb casings in which the chemical weapons came from both Spain and Russia. The CW facilities were overseen in their construction by West German companies (claiming "dual use" capabilities for either peaceful or wartime production).

Here's the "Duelfer Report" our organization issued. Suggest you read it:
