Brumar, before 2003 my posts were probably indistinguishable from yours on a whole range of things. However, on a couple of issues like energy and taxes, I've moved pretty far left in the last 5 years. On most other issues, including fiscal conservatism I'm still right of center. My thinking simply changes when the facts change. On economic issues, you don't have long term prosperity with debts larger than your GDP. The piper is here and no one is going to like what he does to their standard of living. Our past behavior has guaranteed that we're not going to be able to avoid the economic hell that's here and still has worse yet to come. Debt comes from not taxing enough and spending too much. Bush's tax cuts need to be eliminated. Right now, the GOP thinking we can keep taxes low is irresponsible and Dems thinking we can spend trillions with no consequences is also irresponsible. Those are the facts. So the GOP isn't going to like it and the Dems aren't going to like it. But everyone needs to grow up and be fiscally responsible. On energy, my thinking changed only to be more inclusive of other energy sources. I'm still a big believe in the US drilling everywhere we have oil, no holds barred. However, I want the American taxpayer compensated for oil leases at market rates, with no subsidies to oil companies. And I believe we need to incubate new and renewable energy companies to help wean ourselves off of oil, so that we take our national security and economic destiny back into our own hands instead of having it in the hands of the Middle East, Venezuela, and Russia.
